The Study Of Signs, Wonders & Miracles
* Is your challenge today a faith challenge? Is it any of the following?
5. Lack of understanding
6. You feel disconnected
If so, this may be the word that you wanted to hear. If you aren’t having a faith challenge today…please read it anyway. I’ve a feeling there will be one soon. As believers; that’s our charge.
And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord kept working with them and confirming the message by the attesting signs and miracles that closely accompanied [it]. Amen (so be it). Mark 16: 20
I was at the hospital today to pray with a lady. She’s the mom of one of the prayer warriors. I was told that she had felt a little down regarding a condition that the enemy was trying to use to wreak havoc in her life. As soon as I heard it; despite my busy schedule, obligations and promises…I made room. So early on in the day, I found myself driving a very long distance to pick up my friend who’s been faced with a temporal health challenge and her mom. Logistically speaking, there was a lot going against us. That includes factors like: parking, wheel chairs, the difficulty of getting inside the hospital, and a few other things. We had planned to have six people there to pray with her and encourage her…we had two. Nevertheless, we went forward with the plan.
We arrived at our destination and quickly settled in to pray and minister and were we in for a treat! First off, let me say that the patient was in intense pain when we arrived to the point of tears. She had a recent amputation and there was talk of organ failure. My friend anointed her with healing oil and we began to pray. We began to minister the Word of God…and no, it wasn’t watered down Word at all. When we finished, we all praised God and the patient was leading the praises! Soon, the nurse walked in to give her a pain shot. She refused it and said she was no longer in pain. The nurse was insistent: “The doctor said you’re to get a pain shot.” She didn’t want to take “no” for an answer. She explained sweetly that after prayer the pain had completely gone but that she would call back if it returned. This seemed to satisfy the nurse.
As we talked to the patient; she described the preceding day to us. She recalled specifically one of her doctors coming in to see her when she was sobbing. She said the doctor who appeared to be a foreigner with an accent begin to speak the Word of God to her. Then she said the therapists and several nurses began to do the same thing. She felt that this was God’s way of showing her how much He loved her. Then a new doctor came in and began to talk about the test results on her organ in question. He said the numbers are high and the results are good; there is no problem.
Now with that story behind us: let’s talk about miracles.
It amazes me how many people want a miracle. Most people just think it’s okay to ask for one…I don’t dispute that but the bible gives us a lot of insights on miracles. Obviously there are miracles for believers as well as unbelievers. Let’s take a look at some passages.
ACTS 2 gives the body of Christ a good look at miracles:
IN THE ABOVE PASSAGE…PEOPLE WERE MINISTERED TO BY THE DISCIPLES. AFTER THAT, THEY WERE INVITED TO BE SAVED.
NOW PAY ATTENTION TO THIS…THIS IS IMPORTANT!
41Therefore those who accepted and welcomed his message were baptized, and there were added that day about 3,000 souls.
3,000 People accepted. You can believe that they were on fire for God. Look at what they did…they didn’t get baptized go home and forget about it.
42And they steadfastly persevered, devoting themselves constantly to the instruction and fellowship of the apostles, to the breaking of bread [including the Lord’s Supper] and prayers.
43And a sense of awe (reverential fear) came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were performed through the apostles (the special messengers).
LET’S MAKE A LIST OF WHAT THEY DID:
1. THEY STEADFASTLY PERSEVERED.
2. THEY DEVOTED THEMSELVES TO THE INSTRUCTION & FELLOWSHIP OF THE APOSTLES
3. THEY DEVOTED THEMSELVES TO THE BREAKING OF BREAD (TO THE LORD’S SUPPER)
4. THEY DEVOTED THEMSELVES TO PRAYERS (NOTICE THE “S” ON THE END)
5. THERE WAS A SENSE OF REVERENTIAL FEAR THAT CAME ON EVERY SOUL…
AND THEN…MANY SIGNS & WONDERS WERE PERFORMED “THROUGH” THE DISCIPLES.
Even after that…they continued on…and then the people did some powerful things. I can’t call them signs, wonders and miracles …because I don’t know more details but let’s take a look at what happened:
Let’s make a list:
1. THEY WERE UNITED AND HAD EVERYTHING IN COMMON
2. THEY SOLD THEIR POSSESSIONS AND DISTRIBUTED THE PRICE AMONG ALL ACCORDING TO NEED.
3. DAY AFTER DAY THEY REGULARLY ASSEMPLED IN THE TEMPLE WITH “UNITED” PURPOSE>
4. DAY AFTER DAY THEY ASSEMBLED IN THEIR HOMES HAD COMMUNION AND TOOK COMMUNION WITH JOY, SIMPLICITY AND GENEROUS HEARTS.
5. THEY CONSTANTLY PRAISED GOD …(AND NOTICE THIS) AND HAD FAVOR AND “ALL” THE PEOPLE! IT’S A GOOD WAY TO GET FAVOR.
6. THE LORD KEPT ADDING TO THEIR NUMBERS THOSE WHO WERE BEING SAVED.
IF YOU LOOK AT THIS; IT WAS A CYCLE, AS PEOPLE POURED IN AND GAVE THEIR ALL TO GOD; THEY WERE BLESSED BEYOND THEIR DREAMS!
44And all who believed (who adhered to and trusted in and relied on Jesus Christ) were united and [together] they had everything in common;
45And they sold their possessions (both their landed property and their movable goods) and distributed the price among all, according as any had need.
46And day after day they regularly assembled in the temple with united purpose, and in their homes they broke bread [including the Lord’s Supper]. They partook of their food with gladness and simplicity and generous hearts,
47Constantly praising God and being in favor and goodwill with all the people; and the Lord kept adding [to their number] daily those who were being saved [from spiritual death].
