JOSHUA WAS AFRAID OF THE TASK THAT GOD GAVE TO HIM; ARE YOU AFRAID TO MOVE WITH WHAT GOD GAVE YOU? GET YOUR MIND RIGHT. JOSHUA DID IT AND GOD HELPED HIM. HOWEVER, YOU CAN’T DO THIS IF YOU DON’T SPEND TIME WITH GOD.
Like many other believers I love to read the Book of Joshua; especially Chapter One. It talks about being successful and many use the instructions there as a model to go by in life. Joshua was afraid of being a leader; maybe he was afraid of people or afraid of failure. Joshua had spent years shadowing Moses as his apprentice learning how to lead God’s people and how to commune with God; and now that it was his turn he had cold feet. No doubt, he knew how to commune with God; there is no dispute to that. But, he was reluctant to lead the people, after all, he had seen them in their best and worst light. He must have been afraid or felt unworthy; because God had to tell him three times to be strong and courageous and the fourth time it was spoken by the people to Joshua after he began to act on what God said. Once he acted; the miracles began to unfold.
Look at verse 6:
8This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
First God tells Joshua to be strong and have courage. Then he goes back again and takes him…Only be strong and very courageous. It’s like saying This is the course I have for you! Get your mind right. Then God says a third time to Joshua: I’ve commanded you.
6Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.
7Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper withersoever thou goest.
9Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
God gives instructions very carefully in this Chapter and if you read it slowly and meditate in it; there are some pearls of wisdom there.
We can’t hear what Joshua had to say…but if God had to tell him 3X…then he was trying to build Joshua up for success. How many times does God have to tell you what to do?
Finally, once Joshua goes and does what God says: The people confirm what God says by speaking the same exact words God told Joshua. WOW!!! They weren’t there when God spoke to Joshua..but God spoke through them to reassure Joshua.
Sure enough verse 18 reflects:
8Whosoever he be that doth rebel against thy commandment, and will not hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of a good courage.
You’ll see the expression: Be strong and be courageous” in four places in that one Chapter. The last time it is said; something really powerful is taking place. God confirms His word spoken through the mouth of the people.
