She Gave Her Throne Away! by Elaine Davenport January 28- Feb. 5, 2010

Queen Esther inherited the throne thrown away by Queen Vashti

10 On the seventh day, when the king was feeling good from the wine, (Q) Ahasuerus commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, (R) Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar, and Carkas, the seven eunuchs (S) who personally served him, 11 to bring Queen Vashti before him with her royal crown. [He wanted] to show off her beauty to the people and the officials, because she was very beautiful. (T) 12 But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king’s command that was delivered by his eunuchs. The king became furious and his anger burned within him. (U)  Esther 1 v 10-12

Vashti’s behavior caused her marriage to end.  I would say that she did not think it through as the King’s request was not unreasonable; she obviously got caught up.  Her pride got in the way.  It is cleat cut proof that everyone cannot handle power. There are a lot of people who want to be rich, famous or to be in a position of power, but everyone cannot handle it.  With power comes responsibility and integrity.

DIVORCE

When I grew up; divorce was rare and women did everything they could to hold their marriages together.  I do not deny that in some cases men may have had to do this, but our subject today is women.    Fast forward to today in 2010;  and you’ll find that we have a very high divorce rate in this country.

The U.S. divorce rate is supposed to be 36%.  However it goes increasingly higher for the second and third marriage.  Texas has higher numbers of people who are on their second and third marriages.  Some states have people marrying younger and in those states; women start divorces more often.    Japan has a divorce rate that is said to have doubled; it is now around 27%.    Canadian divorce rates were at 48%  in the late 90’s.  75% of the divorces were initiated by women.  It is reported that one year after the divorce; 50% of the children never see their fathers again.  (Wow, there is a need for prayer here)  The United Kingdom divorce rates are at 70%!   That is startling.    Some 60% of Australian couples live together before marriage.

Further Stats:

Divorce rate per 1,000 population:

THE STORY

King Ahasueras was a wealthy man and a man who was greatly respected and desired.   Yet his wife; Queen Vashti did not greatly understand this or esteem this.

That may sound like a bunch of bunk; but let’s look closer:

King Ahasuerus reined over the region from Ethiopia all the way to India.  The bible says that there were some one hundred-twenty seven provinces!    It is said that was the whole civilized world!

After Vashti refused her husband’s request…she found out the hard way that her husband was a man that she had taken for granted.

THE KING DECIDES WHAT TO DO ABOUT VASHTI’S DEFIANCE:

THE KING’S DECREE (READ HERE)

Vashti must have been shocked when she heard this:

1 Later when the anger of King Xerxes had subsided, he remembered Vashti and what she had done and what he had decreed about her.

2 Then the king’s personal attendants proposed, “Let a search be made for beautiful young virgins for the king.

3 Let the king appoint commissioners in every province of his realm to bring all these beautiful girls into the harem at the citadel of Susa. Let them be placed under the care of Hegai, the king’s eunuch, who is in charge of the women; and let beauty treatments be given to them.

4 Then let the girl who pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti.” This advice appealed to the king, and he followed it.

Then, the response:

8So it came to pass, when the king’s commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together unto Shushan the palace, to the custody of Hegai, that Esther was brought also unto the king’s house, to the custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.

Vashti found out that her husband that she so easily took for granted was a man to be desired!

CONCLUSION

They say this is a throw away society.  The bible is very clear about the role of women in a marrage:

15 Scriptures that refer to a woman’s role in her marriage!  (here)

A woman must seriously consider walking away from her marriage.  Truth be told; a woman must seriously pray before getting married, be obedient unto what God says and not override God’s message.

I  assure you that a lot of people get married and never consult God.   In their spirit they know that they are moving too quickly; but they do it anyways.

Am I saying that every woman needs to stay in every marriage; well I can easily say  read the bible and pray.

NOTE: I can’t help but wonder how many women may have thrown away their marriages over some little thing.  I wonder how many are considering the same?  It is my prayer today that wisdom will fall upon every married person male or female and that they will begin to love and esteem one another for Christ’s sake.  Amen

But first, you must be friends:

Be devoted one to another in brotherly love.  Honor one another above yourselves.  Romans 12: 10
