The World’s Valentine’s Day by Elaine Davenport February 12-19, 2010

In a couple of days, people will buy millions of dollars worth of cards and candies and “gift” them to others to say:  “I Love you.” But, I ask you:  “What kind of love is that?  Is it unconditional love or is it the other kind?

In “love” with love?  Well that one is taking in a ton of casualties; the only problem is that it will not last!

OR PERHAPS YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH “TELEVISION  OR MOVIE LOVE” .  That’s not real unless it’s reality television and maybe not even then.

Watching “soap opera sin” laced with an over dose of anxiety is enough to make  your heart hurt. I’m not making this up.

They “abuse” the medium  (of television/ movies far too often; in essence forcing ideas on people and it impacts society too often in a negative way; moving them away from God’s embrace and moral compass.

The kind of love that is possessive yet endearing, jealous; but contained, safe, friendly, romantic; if not provoked?     Is it out of loyalty, obligated…what kind is it?  And finally…is it in line with the Word of God?  If not…how can any believer be a part of that.  No one said it would be easy but you are an overcomer. You must identify it and resist it!  You must!   And if you cannot; pray for change.  PRAYER WILL NOT HURT YOU!!!

That Day that the world celebrates “Love”  is called Valentine’s Day and it is celebrated in countries all over the world; but not every country.   BUT IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD; LOVE IS TO BE CELEBRATED, PRACTICED and  EXPERIENCED; 24-7!!   And it should show!

According to one source:

“On February 14, countries all around the world celebrate St Valentine’s Day or St. Valentine’s Day as they would say it in Italian. Ever since St. Valentine died on February 14, 269 AD, people have been giving their loved ones Valentines and roses and other things to show their feelings toward them. Countries include Italy, UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Mexico, France, Germany, Austria, Spain and Japan, Panama, Korea and Latin America. In Japan the women buy chocolates for the men/boyfriends on that day.”

We grew up hearing the Motown sounds, Philly sounds and a lot of other ones.    Those were some good old days!    Many of the  songs were “Love” songs.  In the beginning there was a lot of “inference” and insinuation; but then things changed.  The lyrics no longer implied; they got downright dangerous!  If you listen closely to the lyrics today; the music may often be  beautiful, but now that I’m a little more analytical; I often wonder how could anyone possibly “sing” along with some songs that portray mesmerizing blends of harmonies that go with words that speak of: murder, making idols of people, pride,  covetousness, conceit, fornication, adultery, lying and worse.

That was the Love Diet that so many of us grew up on. One of my favorite songs was about two married people going together and they were singing about how they might break up.    I sang along with it and never paid attention the the words for years! What?

I honestly had never realized how wrong that was.

I was in church, grew up in church; but we kept our church lives separate and we were taught to love God, keep his commandments .  We were never equipped to apply the word literally to our everyday lives.

This practice continues even today. People take ONE WORD out of the bible to tie a rope around Christians to keep them from using God’s Word to be our moral compass which He intended for it to be.  And Christians respond by falling for it!

God gave the greatest gift of love to the world:

John 3:16 (New International Version)

16“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,[a] that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Now that’s love!  God loves you if you are reading this today.  No matter what you are experiencing, no matter what you are feeling.  God loves you and you must remind yourself of this!  God’s love is 100% unconditional.

1 John 1:9 says:

9If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just (true to His own nature and promises) and will forgive our sins [dismiss our lawlessness] and [continuously] cleanse us from all unrighteousness [everything not in conformity to His will in purpose, thought, and action].

How will you celebrate  Valentine’s Day?  Will you spend time with God?  Will your loved ones be able to say that you love every single day?  Do people see your love?  Do people know that you can love from the heart without anger, malice or evil?  How do you rate according to God’s intentions outlined in 1 Corinthians 13 ? Forgiveness is easier when Love has a firm root in your heart!

By the by:  Happy Valentine’s Day!  We love you!  (unconditionally)
