The NBA Tattoo Dilemma April 26-May 4, 2010

19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20

As I sat blogging the other day, my family watched the NBA playoffs.  I glanced up a couple of times and I exclaimed:  “Oh, my…they are covered with tattoos! ”   “Why, in the world would they do that?”

Somebody shot back:   “Mom, it’s called freedom of speech!”

My reply…

“Since when does freedom of speech override  the Bible?”

Therein lies the problem…

Freedom of speech grew over the years and incorporated to a great degree freedom of thought…and also freedom of expression…and in the aftermath to many…the bible shrunk…in meaning to a lot of them.

Man is like many sports stars in the aspect of being a “free agent” as far as God is concerned…man has free will…the right to choose to follow God in this brief stint on earth…or to “do his own thing.”

Well, if that’s true many might say…let me just do what I want:  commit adultery, fornicate, get tattoos and body piercings, be homosexual, have abortions, kill, cheat, lie…steal…and “just leave me alone!”

Why don’t we just leave these people alone?   Why don’t we stop with all of the warnings?  Why can’t we avoid being judgmental?  Why do we offend people?   WHY?   WHY? WHY?

I’ll answer each question separately.

1.   We have inside information that hell is real,,,and we have heartfelt love for every man…it’s unconditional love…and we have the largest heart for God…so large that we seek to do His will.  It’s God’s will that we snatch people back from the throngs of hell!   And we’ll do that untiul our last breath here on this earth!   It’s our charge!   It’s our mandate!!   It’s our commission!

So, why do Christians join in with the world and get tattoos? Influence, deception, lack of knowledge.

Many Christians do not get tattoos and would not even consider it for a second.  Don’t be fooled!

2. We cannot stop with the warnings…read the answer to No. 1.

3.  We shouldn’t be.   We must fiight very hard to avoid it.

4.  Offense is a four part  sin.  It takes a sender and a receiver.   It also can be deliberate and unintentional.

So…let’s get to the crux of the matter.   I imagine there are lots of Christians in the NBA.  And I’m sure that some have tattoos of loved ones, sentimental points, important milestones…and maybe even Jesus.

There may be a few (if they’ll admit it) who  got tattoos because “everybody” else has them.

Is it covetousness?   I couldn’t answer because I do not know their hearts.   Do they do it to appear tough?   Is it a  thing…or something done to fit in?

Almost everyone has one.  My hat is off to those who don’t.   The non-conformists who against all odds don’t have them.  STAND YOUR GROUND!!

They do it in other sports too…it’s a trend…I just didn’t watch the other sports…so I am talking about what I’ve seen.  However, all role models in sports…be advised….God is watching!

I suppose it all boils down to…whose temple it is in the mind of the person.

So why would I call it a dilemma?  I hate the fact that so many can be influenced by this… LOOK AT JOAKIM NOAH  BELOW:  ….NO TATTOOS!!!I And I vow to pray about  this entire tattoo dilemma.   Please join me.

Ecclesiastes 3

A Time for Everything

1 There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under heaven:

2 a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,

3 a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,

4 a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,

5 a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain,

6 a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,

7 a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,

8 a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.

9 What does the worker gain from his toil? 10 I have seen the burden God has laid on men. 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. 12 I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. 13 That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil—this is the gift of God. 14 I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that men will revere him.

15 Whatever is has already been,
and what will be has been before;
and God will call the past to account. [a]

16 And I saw something else under the sun:
In the place of judgment—wickedness was there,
in the place of justice—wickedness was there.

17 I thought in my heart,
“God will bring to judgment
both the righteous and the wicked,
for there will be a time for every activity,
a time for every deed.”

18 I also thought, “As for men, God tests them so that they may see that they are like the animals. 19 Man’s fate is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath [b] ; man has no advantage over the animal. Everything is meaningless. 20 All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return. 21 Who knows if the spirit of man rises upward and if the spirit of the animal [c] goes down into the earth?”

22 So I saw that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work, because that is his lot. For who can bring him to see what will happen after him?

Thank Him by Ted & Sheri April 27- May 4, 2010

“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the LORD, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, And the young men shall utterly fall, But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:28-31 NKJV)

The Shame of Giving Thanks April 25, 2010

I prayed and prayed about this title…but this is what I kept getting.

Immediately after I had regained consciousness from brain surgery; people began to pour into the hospital to see me. They were all saying the same thing!  “You should really be thanking God girl!   He really worked a miracle in your behalf.”

Well guess what?  Not more than five minutes before they all showed up at my bedside; I realized that I could no longer walk, no one could understand me when I talked, my beautiful voice had disappeared and  now had a heavier new one and the left side of my body was paralyzed.

I nodded my head politely.  Inside I felt guilty.  What was wrong with me…I did not feel like giving thanks.  I was looking at my circumstances and I was not looking through the “eyes of faith.”

I wasn’t ashamed to give thanks…flat out I did not want to!  I felt like throwing a pity party for myself!

We could fill a book with what I did not realize!

God was so patient with me.  He was so merciful.  He showed me how to give thanks…He gave me a reason to praise.  He educated me.  He raised me up.  He corrected me.  I understand how Blessed I was.  I recovered.  I made a commitment to minister to others to tell them that I understand and that God does too.  He has delivered us all from not knowing and fear.  He’s a good God!   Oh yes…He is.

What I describe above is no different than a lot of people.  They let the problem get bigger than God.  That’s impossible.

The God I serve is all knowing and all seeing.   You see…He says that he inhabits the praises of His people…and giving thanks leads to praise they are forms of each other…siblings, directly related.

If Thanksgiving is the case…it is also the “evidence” and praise is solid “proof” that the case is valid.

We are not to be ashamed to give thanks unto God.  Especially when it “seems like” there is no reason.  The lack of an apparent reason in the midst of adverse circumstances is merely a smokescreen!   Giving thanks is more than just being polite…it is heartfelt gratitude…it’s like saying:  I’m glad that I have You…I love You…You are always there!   You are my rock!   You I can count on…You I can rely on…Oh…I can’t stop…thanking You because You first loved me…just as I am…shedding Your Blood precious Lord Jesus…the Love of the Father…unfailing…unconditional…Oh the joy of it all!  So wonderful.

See…the devil tried to kill me.  God saved me.  The Blood of Jesus protected me.  They said it might not happen…but it did!

Two questions:

Should I be ashamed for any time that I ever do not want to give thanks?  Yes, I should.  But, at the same time…there is 1 John 1:9 which says:

Does God believe it is a shame if I do not give thanks?  I believe that I can say…it’s a sin and a shame.   Surely it is given to us in scriptures with reason not to ignore it and for us to receive it and do it.

Not being able to give thanks is a symptom of a lack of  understanding of God’s answer provided to us for our freedom…our freedom to break the chains of bondage!  This is so.

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NKJV)

Communicating With God April 21-28

Prayer is a way of communicating with God.  It is a special language.    It brings us closer to God.  As spirit beings we thrive on that communication.  Prayer is essential especially if you understand the importance of faith, the importance of seeking God’s wisdom,  the importance of staying within God’s perfect will for our lives.  Prayer is key.  It is critical.

Mark 11:24
“Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.”

Prayer is a journey into the unknown to get answers and it is always a successful journey.

Let’s look at some scriptures:

“And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into
a solitary place, and there prayed.” Mark 1:35

Jesus knew the importance of prayer.

Why Pray?

1 Chronicles 16:11 (NIV)

11 Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face alway

Psalms 4:1 (NIV)

1 Answer me when I call to you, O my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; be merciful to me and hear my prayer.

Psalms 5:3 (NIV)

3 In the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.

Psalms 17:1 (NIV)

1 Hear, O LORD, my righteous plea; listen to my cry. Give ear to my prayer– it does not rise from deceitful lips.

Psalms 25:1 (NIV)

1 To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul;

Psalms 37:7 (NIV)

7 Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.

Psalms 50:15 (NIV)

15 and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.

Why Prayer?

Because prayer reels us in to the heart of God, it brings us inside so that we can hear Him and not miss His desires for us!   That’s why.
